La embajadora de EE.UU. en Grecia, Kimberly Guilfoyle, renunció este martes 13 de octubre al cargo en medio de una polémica por presuntas conductas indebidas.
En un largo mensaje publicado en redes sociales agradeció al presidente de EE.UU., Donald Trump, y ratificó su "compromiso" con el movimiento MAGA. Igualmente, se refirió a la controversia que la rodea.
"Estas acusaciones son falsas y pretendo defender con firmeza mi nombre, mi reputación y mi integridad. He dedicado mi vida profesional a luchar por la justicia, a defender lo que es correcto y a proteger los valores que hacen de EE.UU. un país excepcional. No permitiré que acusaciones falsas empañen mis décadas de servicio público", dijo.

Horas antes, la flamante portavoz de la Casa Blanca, Katie Zacharia, había confirmado que el Ejecutivo le había solicitado a Guilfoyle que dejase el puesto.
"Le hemos pedido a la embajadora Guilfoyle que renuncie. Ha sido un gran apoyo para el equipo y le deseamos lo mejor", dijo Zacharia en rueda de prensa.
Mientras que a Trump le preguntaron qué tan sorprendido estaba al enterarse de las acusaciones sobre "casi un miembro de su familia". A lo que respondió: "No, ella no era parte de mi familia. Salió con mi hijo hace mucho tiempo. Estaba haciendo un buen trabajo, pero no nos gustaba lo que estábamos leyendo".

The Wall Street Journal reveló que Guilfoyle había volado al Foro Económico Mundial de enero en un jet privado, acompañada por el director ejecutivo de la empresa constructora griega Aktor Group, Alexandros Exarchou. Paralelamente, animó a los gobiernos desde Bulgaria hasta Albania a hacer negocios con Exarchou y a comprar miles de millones de dólares en gas natural estadounidense a su compañía.
Asimismo, la enviada planeaba volar ese mismo mes a París, Francia, en un avión junto al magnate naviero griego, Nikolas Tsakos, para asistir al desfile de modas de su esposa. Aparte del vuelo, el empresario pagó por su estancia en el lujoso hotel Four Seasons George V de París.
Los abogados de Aktor han declarado que ella no estaba promoviendo de manera inapropiada los intereses comerciales de la firma.
El miércoles se dio a conocer que Guilfoyle pidió a un donante de Trump que transfiriera 100.000 dólares a su cuenta de American Express, y a cambio ofreció su ayuda para resolverle problemas legales y fiscales personales ante la Administración estadounidense. El abogado de la política cuestionó la autenticidad de los mensajes, pero se negó a dar más detalles, resaltó el diario.
